Care Providers Self-insuring: Risky Business?

by Angela Williams - Thursday, September 13, 2012

Life is all about changes, and the field of health care is no different. Medicine is constantly evolving, pressuring those of us who work in it or write about it to keep up.

A recent article in the Washington Post talked about the relatively new phenomenon of health systems and hospitals aligning with (and sometimes becoming) insurance companies.

The article is an interesting look at a changing landscape. Under the Affordable Care Act, medical providers are tasked with keeping patients well through preventive medicine rather than simply providing reactive medicine to care for injuries and illnesses. As a result, some providers, such as the one discussed in this article, are aligning with insurance companies—and changing to a preventive model designed to keep patients out of the hospital.

Take a look at the article for yourself, and let us know what you think!
